Aromatology is a science based on precise botanical knowledge. Ignorance and neglect of this knowledge can lead to abuse, adverse reactions, and toxicity. Latin names must be used, rather than vernacular information that can be imprecise and sometimes misleading. It is imperative to know precisely which plant to use.
A "Family" is composed of related group of classes.
A "Class" is composed of a closely related group of species.
A "Species" is composed of a closely related group of plants with very specific characteristics.
A "Subspecies" is a species division.
A "Cultivated Variety" (cultivar) is plant cultivated for unique, specific characteristics. It is a spontaneous variant of a species (not to be confused with voluntary hybridizing)
A "Hybrid" is the result of a cross between varieties, cultivar and species.

It is absolutely necessary to use a dispersant like a vegetable oil (sweet almond oil or different), a neutral base for bath or quite simply your shampoo.

Essential oils must be handel with great care. Those vegetal extracts are the most powerful of the vegetal kingdom.
Please, read the following precaution with attention.

 

-Keep out of reach of children
 

-Avoid contact with the eyes. In case of accidental contact of essential oils with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with running water to get as much out as you can. Then, soak a cotton ball in vegetable oil to temper the aggressiveness of any remaining essential oil.

-Never place undiluted essential oils in the mucons mendranes, i.e. nose, ears, anal and genital areas.

-The general use of essential oils on women during the first trimester of pregnancy is not indicated.
The use of essential oils during pregnancy and for breastfeeding women requires the guidance of a qualified therapist.
 

-Patients with allergic tendencies should always test each and every essential oil in the following manner:
- put 1-2 drops on the crook of one arm,
- wait 10 minutes
If a reaction occurs, the oil should not be used.
If a person shows signs of illness after consuming a few drops of oil, this may be an idiosyncratic, allergic reaction – seek immediate medical assistance.
 

-Avoid exposure to sunlight after external use of essential oils containing furocoumarins (lemon, mandarin, sweet orange…). Those essential oils are photosensitizing and highly increased the risk of sunburns.

-Essential oils rich in phenols or aldehydes are aggressive for the skin. They should always be diluted down in a soothing vegetable oil in a proportion of max. 15% of essential oil for 85% of vegetable oil.

-Oral use of essential oil requires the guidance of a therapist. In case of accidental ingestion: ingest vegetable oil and call a poison control center.

-Pure essential oils can never blend with water. If you want to use this carrier to prepare an aromatic bath, you must always use four parts of an emulsifying dispersant (disper, labrafil, labrasol) for every part of essential oil. Remember the limit is 10 drops essential oil for 100 litres (approx 26 gallons) of water.

-Never inject essential oils intramuscularly.

-Choose top-quality, controlled products & beware of "natural essence". Essential oils that come from the distillation of wild or organically grown plants possess virtues far superior to those coming from plants grown with the help of chemical substances.

What is an Essential Oil?

An essential oil is a very concentrated liquid extract obtained after steam distillation of an aromatic plant.

What is Scientific Aromatherapy?

Depending on the biotope (sunshine, climatic conditions, soil composition, altitude, neighbouring plant population…) a given aromatic plant can produce essential oils bio-chemically very different.

Expression

This method is the simplest, but is only possible with citrus fruit (orange, lemon bergamot…). It consists of mechanically breaking the “essence pockets” contained in the fresh peel of citrus fruits in order to collect the essences. The product obtained is called “essence” and not “essential oil” because the aromatic active molecules have not been submitted to the physicochemical action of a solvent or a steam distillation but to a simple mechanical expression.
